It’s a fact. The world of hip-hop is finally evolving. It’s been innovating and developing all along, but so deep underground that the only coverage afforded was in seedy record stores in University districts across the nation. The internet, along with ample access to crying while eating videos and forum space to argue your point of view in Kirk Vs. Picard, has crafted a variety of new and inspiring musical acts that actually become popular, because people are able to hear them easily. You aren’t faced with the undesirable option of paying $20 for an album only one random guy who’s so pale you can see what he ate for lunch through his skin recommended in line at a seedy bar concert. Myspace is the new MTV and rightfully so, because it puts the listener in control, not Carson Daly and Lala.

One of the most intriguing and enjoyable bands to come out of the Myspace wave of new music is Gym Class Heroes. Their first album, The Papercut Chronicles, released in 2005 was a brilliant mashup of Hip Hop poetics and the stage presence of the indie generation. A Supertramp sample put it all over the top.

The band returned in the summer of 06 with a new album, As Cruel as School Children, that not only rewarded the promise of the first, but improved upon tenfold. Travis, the groups lead singer and poet extraordinaire proves himself not only an ample showman but an incredibly gifted writer.
The album is laid out as a day in school, each track labeled as Period 1-13, with the inclusion of little asides (lunch, study hall, and yearbook club) that make up a three part poem titled “Sloppy Love Jingle”, cleverly produced and just funny enough to fit the bands style.

The tracks themselves, are almost without exception energetic, foot bouncing dance inducing tracks, complete with hook, chorus, and the musically curiosity of Sting. On “The Queen and I” you’ll here a combination of acoustic and electric guitars, a smooth synth enhancement in the back, and chorus backing up Travis’s frantic, energetic narration of that girlfriend we’ve all had at least once.

They don’t stop there, constantly searching and poking at different stylistic elements, testing the heavier guitar riffs and even penning a poppy ode to the site that saw 13 million listens, Myspace in “New Friend Request”.

Funky R&B, sensuality isn’t above the boys as one of the best foot tapping to dance inducing tracks of the album pops up in “Clothes Off”, evoking throwbacks to Prince and Parliament Funkadelic.

Every track on this album builds upon the previous tracks, taking a cozy, warm journey through the boys’ own trek these past couple years, as they rhyme about their careers, the hard times they went through, the women troubles, the writing troubles, and ultimately the successes, and a final rallying call to “Write On” and do it on your own, the mentality that seems to pervading the music of the 21st century.

Daughtry Rock Music CD Review

Posted by Jeffrey Chua | 7:37 AM

Daughtry is the latest Rock CD released by the very talented Daughtry who once again has delivered a brilliant collection of tracks. I’m confident Daughtry fans, and Rock fans alike will be pleased with this one.

It's a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I'm more than happy to announce that’s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply isn’t a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all, with each song standing tall on it's own.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you’ve got one of Daughtry’s most impressive releases ever.

I’m of the opinion that Daughtry is certainly Daughtry’s best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up because it’s a collection that even the casual Rock fan can appreciate and enjoy.

While this entire album is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 6 - Feels Like Tonight, track 10 - There And Back Again, and track 12 - What About Now.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - It’s Not Over. Great track!

Daughtry Release Notes:

Daughtry originally released Daughtry on November 21, 2006 on the RCA Records label.

CD Track List Follows:

1. It's Not Over 2. Used To 3. Home 4. Over You 5. Crashed 6. Feels Like Tonight 7. What I Want - (featuring Slash) 8. Breakdown 9. Gone 10. There And Back Again 11. All These Lives 12. What About Now

If you’re into indie music or just want to discover alternatives to mainstream offerings, then it’s worth giving eMusic a shot – even if it’s just for the 25 free tracks that you get with the trial. The biggest gripe about the eMusic service is the way they execute their subscription model; if you don’t use all your allotted downloads in a month, then they are not rolled over to the next month; this seems a little harsh considering you have already paid. That said, if you don’t mind a subscription based service and music from independent labels only, then you’ll love eMusic.

Akon can touch your soul with his songs

Posted by Jeffrey Chua | 4:49 AM

What was I doing when I was 15? In school, playing childhood pranks with friends, cramming up books for examination purposes and in general being a normal 15-year old having fun in the game called life. While another 15 year old somewhere in the world was recording his first song ‘Operations of Nature’. Yes, I am talking about the popular artiste Akon who is not only a Senegalese-American hip hop and R&B singer and songwriter but also a record producer. Akon, who has taken the music world by storm with his album ‘Konvicted’ though that, has in no way diminished the popularity of his other songs and albums, made a strange beginning to his life. The journey of Akon from a regular teenager to an artiste of international fame has a moral for everyone. The most important lesson learned from his life is that talent finds its own way and helps you reach the pinnacle of success sooner or later.

Few people know that Akon is actually the shortest form of his real name that is actually Alioune Badara Thiam. Born to jazz percussionist Mor Thiam, Akon Music gave no indication of his approaching stardom even as a teenager when he was jailed for armed robbery and drug distribution charges. But the musical family background and the early indications through recording of first song at the age of fifteen laid the path to success. The stint in jail helped to change his approach to life and discover his true calling and it was behind the prison wall that Akon worked on his music. It also inspired his hit single ‘Locked Up’ that is still on the popularity of many music lovers. The single ‘Smack that’ from his album ‘Konvicted’ also earned Akon a Grammy nomination for the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. Akon has dedicated the album ‘Konvicted’ to his friend and manager Robert Montanez who was shot dead.

Akon has ventured out into the field of movies and fashion. He is planning to work on a full-length movie called ‘Illegal Alien’ that is based on some aspects of his life. Akon also launched his clothing line ‘Konvict Clothing’ that features urban streetwear like denims, hoodies, t-shirts and hats. Aliaune is the upscale version of this clothing line. Akon has truly projected himself as a multi-dimensional artiste with many shades to his personality. However this also brings with it the danger of controversies and it is especially true for an artiste of his stature. Akon has been surrounded by criticisms and controversies from time to time and his earlier start as a criminal with a jail sentence to his name has done nothing to help matters. Early this year Akon drew a lot of flake from the moral police and advertisers regarding his raunchy dance in a Trinidad club with an under-age girl. True to his nature Akon apologized to the girl and Gwen Stefani, whose tour was also, affected due to this incident, through his newly released song, ‘Sorry, Blame It on Me.’

A singer, songwriter, producer who is also into fashion and movies – Akon truly is the epitome of success for many of his fans across the globe.

Light On by David Cook

Never really said too much
Afraid it wouldn’t be enough
Just try to keep my spirits up
When there’s no point in grieving
Doesn’t matter anyway
Words could never make me stay
Words will never take my place
When you know I’m leaving

(Chorus)

Try to leave a light on when I’m gone
Something I rely on to get home
One I can feel at night
A naked light, a fire to keep me warm
Try to leave a light on when I’m gone
Even in the daylight, shine on
And when it’s late at night you can look inside
You won’t feel so alone

You know we’ve been down that road
What seems a thousand times before
My back to a closing door and my eyes to the seasons
That roll out underneath my heels
And you don’t know how bad it feels
To leave the only one that I have ever believed in

[Chorus]

Sometimes it feels like we’ve run out of luck
When the signal keeps on breaking up
When the wires cross in my brain
You’ll start my heart again
When I come along

[Chorus]

David Cook’s Rise To Stardom (01)

Posted by Jeffrey Chua | 1:36 AM

Many of you may remember his unforgettable performance of “Billie Jean” in this season’s American Idol, or have grown to love his boy-next-door charm. Regardless of a thousand more reasons, David Cook has definitely shown his worth in being in the top four finalists this year. And most people are willing to bet that his rise in fame, only rivaled by Hollywood stardom, is assured.

Rocking with his Gibson Les Paul guitar, and singing with his strong and husky voice has always been a dream for the twenty-five year old David Cook who was born in Houston, Texas and raised in Blue Springs, Missouri.

At an early age, he received his first instrument (a guitar, naturally) and started singing in his elementary school choir. His teachers were always supportive of his talent, thus giving him the opportunity to perform in Christmas and PTA programs year by year.

By the time he entered middle school and high school, he was cast as an actor/singer in musicals such as The Music Man, West Side Story, and Singing in the Rain. David earned a theatrical scholarship to the University of Central Missouri, but gave up theater in order to graduate with a degree in graphic design. It wasn’t until he graduated from college when he pursued his childhood dream of being a musician.

David eventually moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma and told his parents that he was going to put off getting a job until he turned twenty-six years of age. All he cared for at that moment was his pursuit of music. So from 1999 to 2006, he became the lead vocalist and guitarist for the band Axium. Their song “Hold” was purchased by AMC theaters to use as music played before the previews started in over 20,000 theaters around the country. Axium was also hailed as one of the top 15 independent bands in America, as was stated in the “Got Milk?” independent band contest in 2004.

Axium might have broken up in 2006, but it only meant the start of David’s career as a solo artist. He joined a regional touring band named Midwest Kings for a while, as he did almost everything; from playing guitar and bass to singing back-up. He recorded an EP with Midwest Kings titled Incoherent with Desire to Move On while working as a bartender on the side.

David was extremely busy in 2006. That same year he also recorded and released a solo album called Analog Heart. It was also the year when he graduated from college. Music Equals Life chose it as number four on the best 2006 albums list. It was also warmly accepted by Urban Tulsa Weekly, dubbing it "Absolute Best of Tulsa" award for "Best Locally Produced, Independent Album" in 2007.

At first David had no plans to audition for American Idol. He claimed that he was just there to accompany and support his brother. It was only out of curiosity that made him audition. Lucky for all of us that he did! However (on a side note) because he made it through to Hollywood, his first album, which was ranked number one on “Today’s Top MP3 Albums” at that that time by Amazon, was immediately taken out.

In any case, David’s success still went with smoothly. Aside from his jaw dropping performances every week, Simon commented on his performance of the Chris Cornell inspired version of “Billie Jean” as a performance that "was in a different league to anything we've heard on the season so far."

Can I Find A Top Free Music Download Site?

Posted by Jeffrey Chua | 12:14 AM

When you decide that its time to download music off the Internet, it can be a complete nightmare when starting to look.

The issue of downloading illegal music makes the situation even worse, and so you are left in the dark and end up either not downloading any music, or spending money on several different sites hoping that they will fit your needs.

We are all aware of the major music download sites, such as Napster and iTunes which are the sites that pop into your head when you think of downloading music, but there are many other sites out there that give you the same choice and quality at a much cheaper price, or even for free.
This is because those companies are smaller, with fewer overheads and advertising costs and therefore they can afford to lower their prices and achieve a competitive advantage over the major players.

In fact, many of these cheaper sites only charge a one-off small time fee and from there you can download as much free music as you wish. There are no restrictions on the volume of music that you can download or on the speed at which you download.

These sites give you almost unlimited freedom.

On the other hand, the well-known sites that I mentioned earlier often charge you per song, which can mount up to a serious amount of money (almost the same as buying a CD in a shop).
Furthermore, they have restrictions on download speeds and volumes which can be extremely frustrating; especially when you have paid a decent amount of money.

You might be asking yourselves why the big brand name companies charge more than these other sites and I have been pondering this for a long time.

I think it maybe due to the fact that these companies are so well-known, and they are aware of this. Consequently, they are confident that the majority of people looking for a music download service will come to them, and pretty much only them because of the trust people have for a brand.

Through knowing this, they realize they can charge a little extra than others without losing much custom.
We all know that brands are more expensive than non-brand items and most of the time non-brand items are of the same or even higher quality.

For example, when I go to the supermarket, there are certain products that I buy which are non-branded; not solely because I want to save money, but because I know that this certain product is of the same quality if not higher quality. Therefore, in this case why not save?

The point is, there are free music download sites out there that have been positively reviewed by many happy customers. They offer you an alarming range of mp3s to download from, up to 14 million in some cases.

Furthermore, the speed at which you download the music is lightening and there are no download limits. If you wish to burn the music onto a CD then they can offer you this option as well online support.

If you check the sites ranking on alexa.com you will see that the best ones are ranked in the top 10,000 most popular sites on the Internet. Personally I find this extremely impressive for just a music download site, especially when Napster is ranked in the 50,000s.

This traffic knowledge for me reinforces if a site is creditable or not.

It is therefore important for me to say that you can find top of the range free music download sites, but you must be careful before pulling out your credit cards and giving them your money.

My advice would be to check their traffic rankings on alexa.com in order to find out whether there are actually people using the site or not.

Also, I would recommend doing a search on google for reviews of a particular site you come across. It might be that previous customers have given good or bad reviews on the site, in a forum for example.
That will consequently sway your decision.

10 Tips To Find A Legal Music Download Site

Posted by Jeffrey Chua | 12:11 AM

Below I will talk about my top 10 tips to help you find a legal music download site. Hopefully they will help you divert away from illegal download sites.

1. Pay for use

This is one of the most effective ways to identify whether a site is legal or not. Look for download sites that charge you per song, or per month or per year.

If you see a site offering free music downloads for a certain trial period, then this doesnt necessarily mean that the site is legal. Many legal sites use this as an enticement, so do not be put off by that.

2. Size Limits

A legal music download site generally distributes music from reputable labels and artists. This means that you will not find a wide range of mixes and custom files that will almost certainly slow down your connection, and therefore take forever to download.
Moreover, if these files are small it assures the music retail industry that the music site is actually selling real legal music, and not the massive files associated with computer games and movies etc

3. Volume limits

Legal music download sites usually distribute their material on a per song basis. One of the major advantages of buying your music online is that you dont have to spend $17 for an entire album if you only want 3 or 4 songs.
Legal music sites will actually setup download limits as well as transfer rate limits. As a result, this prevents dishonest customers from setting up their computers to copy hundreds of files in a few hours.

4. Larger databases, Larger costs

The larger the databases that the legal download sites have, the more it will actually cost you. This can actually lead to paying a bit more than a normal CD in the shop IF the store has literally hundreds and hundreds of thousands of songs because they could cost between $1 - $3.
Therefore, dont go for the exceptionally large databases. The reason why these sites are more expensive than the illegal music sites is because they are obliged to give a portion of their fees back to the recording industry.

5. Limited Choice

Most of the legal music download sites dont have the capacity or copyright authority to distribute hundreds of millions of songs. The songs are stored on servers with a finite amount of space unlike the tangled web of computer to computer file transfers from the illegal sites.

The other reason for the limited choice is that it is highly unlikely that they will get an agreement from every single record label to distribute their music online.

The quality of every online music catalog depends on the Music Studios that are providing the material. Established, and therefore popular artists usually switch labels at least once during their singing career. So you might have access to their newer materials, but not the older songs, or vice versa.

6. No Adware or Spyware

Legal music download sites like their offline retail counterparts are getting an actual fee for their service. They dont want to scam or upset their customers by placing dangerous and annoying spyware and adware programs on their computers.

7. Music Only

The fact is that a legal music download site will only have music on it to download. This means that you wont be able to download computer games, movies or anything else like this.

8. Copyright Notice

A clearly written copyright notice should be provided on the site stating:

a) The nature of the site owners authorization to distribute legal music files online

b) What you can do with the files once you have paid for them

c) Any limitations on either party as far as use and distribution of the files.

9. No file sharing allowed

You are only allowed to use the files for personal use. Unlike a CD (physical product) you cannot purchase songs, use them and then sell them to another party or distribute them free of charge to friends, family, web surfers etc.

10. Backed by a big label?

Most of the legal music download sites are backed by at least one major music label. People are looking for songs that are popular, on the radio, playing in the clubs or on MTV.
All of that commercial material comes out of the studio system. If the label does not provide the material, subject to fees, taxes and copyright notices, then the site cannot legally distribute them.

New Red Hot Chili Peppers CD Sizzles

Posted by Jeffrey Chua | 11:27 PM

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a band that has transcended the scope of pop culture , adapting to new trends while still maintaining their original funk-based style. Playing music for nearly two decades, the Chili Peppers show an unrepentant strength on their new album.

Dubbed "Stadium Arcadium", the new Red Hot Chili Peppers release is a double-disc powerhouse that fully showcases the range of this classic band. Totaling 28 tracks, there is something for every Peppers fan, from those who rocked to One Hot Minute in the early 90s to the new fan-base they have gained through such recent releases as By The Way. You can get a sense of the hormone-fueled music that was a Chili Peppers trademark in their formative years in such tracks as Warlocks and Storm In A Teacup. The bass lines laid out by Flea help to form cohesion to the CD, with John Frusciante fully tuned in and never disappointing with the guitar work. Anthony Kiedis' vocals remain on-point and can evoke powerful emotions, even though the stereotypical Chili Peppers non-sensical lyrics are as prevalent as ever. More recent Chili Peppers fans will be happy to know that the CD has plenty of the mellow, laid back Californication-esque tracks. Dani California, Tell Me Baby, and Wet Sand are some of the songs on this album that we will be hearing for years to come.

Are there any problems with the CD? Sure. There isn't too much of a coherent flow amongst the discs, and you may find yourself skipping around between tracks to satisfy what mood you are in. While tracks like Snow are upbeat and energetic, the album drags you through melancholy in some of the slower songs such as Strip My Mind. You can tell that the band is dabbling outside of their comfort zone at several points in the CD, with songs such as Snow having an almost foreign feel, while still unmistakably being a Chili Peppers tune.

All in all, I would highly recommend purchasing the new album. It has something for everyone, and with 28 tracks you'll be hard pressed to not find at least 3 or 4 songs that will stay with you. Aside from some slight problems with the flow of the CD and the fact that a few tracks that could've been best saved for a B-side, Stadium Arcadium is a record that will not be soon forgotten.

Green Day Revives Punk Rock Music

Posted by Jeffrey Chua | 11:20 PM

Green Day is an American punk rock trio composed of Tre Cool on drums, Mike Dirnt on bass and Billie Joe Armstrong on lead vocals and guitars. They have backup members for guitars (Jason White), keyboards (Jason Freese) and trumpet (Ronnie Blake).

During the mid 90s, along with other Californian bands like Rancid and The Offspring, Green Day revived the popularity of the punk rock scene in the United States. The success of Green Day and other punk rock bands have influenced the new generation of punk rock bands like Good Charlotte and Sum41.

Having sold over 25 million records in the U.S. alone and over 65 million albums worldwide, Green Day is one of the most successful punk rock bands of all time.

Green Day have successfully won three Grammy Awards Best Rock Album for American Idiot, Best Alternative Album for Dookie and Record of the Year for the single Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

The story of Green Day started when childhood friends Mike Dirnt and Billy Joe Armstrong, which were both 14 years old in 1986, decided to form a 2 person band that they called Sweet Children.

Performing their first live act at the workplace of Armstrong`s mom, Sweet Children experience their first exposure as a band. In 1998, however, Al Sobrante joined the band as their drummer. The three piece band soon switched their band name to Green Day after a marijuana incident and played their first performance at Sobrante`s school in Contra Costa College, San Pablo, California.

When Larry Livermore of Lookout! Records saw Green Day performed, he offered the band a record deal and immediately released their first EP in 1989 called 1,000 Hours. The band recorded two other EPs known as Slappy and Sweet Children.

When Sobranted moved to California to attend college, Tre Cool became a temporary drummer for Green Day. However, when Sobrante couldn`t commit to the band any further, Tre became the permanent drummer for the band.

In early 1991, Green Day released their second album known as Kerplunk! under Lookout! Records, while featuring Tre Cool on drums. Green Day successfully performed plenty of live acts during 1992 and 1993 all throughout U.S. and Europe. The second album sold over fifty thousand albums in the U.S. alone and over two million records worldwide.

With the release of the successful Kerplunk! album, Green Day was a focus of major record labels and the band ultimately left Lookout Records. Although many fans regarded Green Day as a sell out, the trio had no choice but to move.

In 1994, Dookie became a major commercial hit, after recording it in a mere three weeks. Songs like basket case, when I come around and Longview all became #1 songs on different charts. Because of this massive popularity, Green Day was able to perform at Woodstock 1994 and Lollapalooza. The following year, Green Day was nominated for nine awards while winning the Best Alternative Album.

Green Day released a single entitled J.A.R. in 1995, which was soon followed by their third album Insomniac. The album comprised of a darker and more melodic style of songs like Walking Contradiction, Stuck With Me and Brain Stew/Jaded. After winning an MTV Video Music Award, Green Day took a break from producing music and performing concerts, claiming exhaustion.

In 1996, after their much criticized break, Green Day recorded and released their nimrod album. Major hit songs like Good Riddance (Time of Your Life), Redundant and Hitchin` a Ride were products of the band`s experimental style, far from their standard pop punk rock signature. The band again took two years off to spend time with their families.

When Green Day came back to the music scene in 2000, they released an album called Warning:, which reflects a more mature version of their music. However, the Warning: album only received gold, instead of double platinum labels like their past albums. Fortunately, Green Day won eight awards at the California Music Awards on 2001 for this album.

While Green Day was working on a new album, which was supposed to be entitled Cigarettes and Valentines, the master tapes of 20 complete tracks were stolen from their recording studio. In 2004, without trying to use their materials from the stolen album, Green Day released the 2004 American Idiot album, which instantly became #1 on different music charts.

All throughout 2005, Green Day did 150 shows promoting their album on a worldwide tour. To this day, Green Day remains a strong influence to modern punk rock bands.

Feel the impression with Nickelback

“Great music is that which penetrates the ear with facility and leaves the memory with difficulty. Magical music never leaves the memory”. As Sir Thomas Beecham rightly music is the food for the soul of all music lovers. In fact any kind of music leaves an impression on everyone. Nickelback is one such Canadian rock band that has left a great impression on its listeners. Nickelback was formed in Hanna in Alberta by Chad Kroeger, Mike Kroeger and Ryan Peake. As time passed by, Nickelback outshone as a rock band and received huge success in every part of the world. In fact their hit single "How You Remind Me" from their very third album scrapped to the zenith on the Canadian Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100. In fact the song as well as the album received huge acclamations which made Nickelback the third Canadian rock band to make this possible after the hit the “American Woman” by The Guess Who and the second being "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

When Nickelback started as a band they did not have enough funds to finance the recording of a song of an album. Chad had to borrow cash from his step father and then used a friend’s studio in Vancouver to record their first album. Nickelback then went on board on cross country tours across several countries and this led to high publicity and promotion of their album as well as them as a successful rock band. In 2000, Nickelback independently released their second full album which was titled “The State”. In fact during this time Canada witnessed the passing of a law that proved to be highly beneficial for Nickelback. The law stated that Canadian content requirement must be increased for Canadian radio. Now due to this law local radio stations were rigorously looking out for some Canadian rock bands that they could sing for them and promote the Canadian radio stations. It was then when Nickelback gained a lot as a result of this law and their popularity reached new levels.

Nickelback Music has won nine Juno Awards, an American Music Award, an MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film (Hero), and a World Music Award for World's Best-Selling Rock Artist. The band also got nominated for seven Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards and twelve Juno Awards. In fact on the 4th of December 2006, Nickelback won three Billboard Music Awards out of five nominations.

Nickelback Music has proved to be one rock band that believes in the spirit of using music as medium to spread the message of love and peace. In fact their song “If Every One Cared” is out there to prove this point and make people realize that our world is a much better place to live in and it is we who can make this place a better place to live in. The song “If Every One Cared” has actually outshined its way and lived up to the expectations of the audience and hence proved to the audience to expect some good quality music from the band and that the songs are meant to leave an impression on everyone.
